---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUN SYSTEM DELIVERS INDUSTRY'S BEST SYBASE PRICE/PERFORMANCE ON TPC-A BENCHMARK SunFLASH Vol 50 #1 February 1993 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPARCserver 10 Model 41 Beats Out Competitor's High-End Midrange Systems MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - February 1, 1993 - Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today announced that its SPARCserver(TM) 10 Model 41 system achieved the industry's best-ever Sybase price/performance on the Transaction Processing Performance Council Benchmark-A (TPC-A). This popular benchmark is used widely to measure database performance and price/performance. The SPARCserver Model 41 TPC-A results were 108.07 transactions per second (tps-A) at $7,087 per tps-A, with the system running SYBASE SQL Server and the Solaris(R) distributed computing environment. Among all relational databases and all systems, Sun's server had the best price/performance in its class. "These TPC-A results are further proof of our commitment to design balanced systems that deliver high performance in commercial production environments," said Larry Hambly, vice president of marketing at SMCC. "While these outstanding results were achieved with a single processor SPARCserver 10, we expect significantly better performance with the future TPC-A results on our multiprocessor SuperSPARC(TM)-equipped systems running Solaris." "Sybase and SMCC's technical teams worked closely on performance improvements in both the software and hardware that will benefit our joint customers. These benchmark results show once again that we've achieved excellent price/performance in a Sybase and Sun(TM) environment," said Mark Pine, vice president, Sybase Server and Connectivity Group. The recent benchmark tested a Model 41 supporting a network of four SPARCstation(TM) ELC(TM) workstations and 1,090 terminals. Besides having the best price/performance in its class, this entry-level server had TPC-A results that compared favorably with those from high-end servers from other leading vendors: SYSTEM TPS-A $per TPS-A SPARCserver 10 Model 41 c/s* 108.07 $ 7,087 DEC(R) VAXserver(TM)6000-610 c/s 102.30 $ 8,940 HP(R) 9000 Series 800 Model H40 c/s 110.53 $ 8,479 HP 9000 Series 800 Model I40 c/s 110.53 $ 8,790 IBM(R) RISC 6000/970 c/s 100.96 $10,730 TPC-A, the TPC's first benchmark approved in November, 1989, simulates or is representative of on-line transaction processing (OLTP) environments. TPC-A is a complete system benchmark and simulates an environment in which multiple users, using terminals, PCs, or workstations, are accessing and updating a common database over a local or wide-area network. *All systems listed ran TPC-A client-server as indicated in the TPC Summary Results listing as of January 15, 1993.
