sunflash-Distributed to mailing list sun/NC/north-carolina sunflash-Send requests, problems to owner-sunflash@suntri.east.sun.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Support Strategy for Solaris 1.1C SunFLASH Vol 56 #18 August 1993 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 56.18 Support Strategy for Solaris 1.1C The Solaris(R) 1.1C operating environment is a special hardware platform release for the SPARCstation(TM) LX and SPARCclassic(TM) systems. Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) and SunSoft are providing this release in response to customer requests for a Solaris 1.x solution on SMCC's latest desktop hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SunService will support Solaris 1.1C on SPARCstation LX and SPARCclassic machines only. No other SPARC(R) platforms will be supported under this release. Support contracts for Solaris 1.1C will be available under the SunService(TM) standard "Software Support Service" and "SunSpectrum(SM)" program support offerings. Solaris 1.1C will be treated as a hardware special platform release with a full set software support offerings. SunService will provide customers who are under an existing support contract a free "downgrade" from Solaris 2.x to Solaris 1.1C free of charge on a demand pull basis. SunService will only deliver this product to existing contract customers. Customers will be able to migrate from Solaris 1.1C back to Solaris 2.x free of charge as well. No additional license fees will be charged. Customers who are not under support contract and want to receive the Solaris 1.1C release may purchase it from the SMCC Price List. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. If the customer decides to return to Solaris 2.x after downgrading to Solaris 1.1C, can the customer obtain Solaris 2.x at a later date? A. Yes, the customers can upgrade back to Solaris 2.x at no additional charge using media either purchased with the system or received through a normal contract upgrade. Solaris 2.2 should be widely available in the support contract customer base. Q. What happens to the customer's Solaris 2.x license if he orders Solaris 1.1C? A. The customer is stilled licensed for 2.x. There is no change in the license because all USL royalties were paid under his original Solaris 2.x license. No additional charge is required. Q. How does the customer order Solaris 1.1C? A. Contract customers will be notified of Solaris 1.1C via SunSolve(TM) EarlyNotifier(TM) service. Customers who demand this release should contact their local SunService office for ordering details after the First Customer Ship date of 15 August. Q. Can a customer install the existing patches for Solaris 1.1A on Solaris 1.1C and expect them to work? A. SunSoft has neither tested nor ported the existing Solaris 1.1A patches to Solaris 1.1C. Contract customers who require existing Solaris 1.1A fixes for Solaris 1.1C should open a service request with their local SunService Answer Center. PRICING & ORDERING INFORMATION ------------------------------ Support pricing for Solaris 1.1C will be included in the SunSpectrum support price or Software Support Service and will be the same as Solaris 1.1A. This release will be a limited distribution release for customers who have a Solaris or SunSpectrum support contract. Customers must request this release. Customers will be notified of the availability of 1.1c through SunSolve EarlyNotifier service. Please contact your local SunService office after Solaris 1.1C First Customer Shipment (August 15, 1993) for specific ordering information.
