---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Sun's New SPARCengine Board Is First To Include Integrated Graphics SunFLASH Vol 33 #11 September 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Offers Industry's Best Performance MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --September 11, 1991-- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation today introduced the SPARCengine(R) IPX(TM), the industry's first board-level product to include built-in graphics along with a RISC processor and networking on just one board. At 24.2 SPECmarks (28.5 MIPS and 4.2 MFLOPs), the new board offers the industry's best performance and is priced below competitive board products. Using highly integrated ASIC and advanced graphics technology, Sun has reduced its graphics accelerator to a single chip and compressed all the other functions of the SPARCstation(TM) IPX workstation onto a compact board. The SPARCengine IPX becomes a new class of single-board computer that delivers greater functionality than ever before to the board industry. The new board further boosts the capabilities of embedded and UNIX(R) systems. It will offer many advantages to commercial and government markets where size, cost and graphics capabilities are important issues: factory automation, medical instrumentation, telecommunications and command and control, as well as in systems like laptop computers and ruggedized systems for the military. Sun has been supporting these markets with a growing line of SPARC(R)/RISC board products and is the largest vendor of RISC-based boards. New Board Features High Performance, Integrated Graphics Unlike other board vendors that only offer graphics as an add-on board, Sun has integrated its GX accelerated graphics hardware into a single chip mounted on the CPU board. Sun can thus provide high-performance 2-D and 3-D color graphics for embedded and real-time applications at a much lower cost than other vendors. The SPARCengine IPX is powered by a new 40 MHz SPARC microprocessor that combines integer and floating point units on a single chip. The SPARCengine IPX squeezes all components (CPU, I/O, cache, memory, SCSI, audio, Ethernet, two SBus slots and GX graphics) into a 9- by 9.7-inch CPU board. It comes with 16 megabytes of memory, expandable to 64 megabytes. The SPARCengine IPX runs Solaris(TM)1.0 operating system software as well as Sun's ONC(TM) networking software. It also supports the OpenWindows(TM) environment, which features the intuitive OPEN LOOK(R) graphical user interface and 15 DeskSet(TM) productivity tools. Systems equipped with this board can run more than 3,600 SPARCware solutions available from third-party vendors. Availability The SPARCengine IPX configured with 16 megabytes of memory is available immediately.
