Sun announces an SBus version of the Prestoserve NFS accelerator
technology for the SPARCsystem 2.  Now, you can take advantage of this
low-cost SBus-based NFS accelerator to improve new NFS file servers.


SBUS PRESTOSERVE OVERVIEW
-------------------------
Sun's SBus Prestoserve is a non-volatile disk cache that is functionally
the same as the VMEbus version available on the SPARCserver 470 and
490.  SBus Prestoserve is a single-slot SBus card and software that
dramatically improves NFS write performance.  SBus Prestoserve improves
NFS throughput up to 140%, and response times up to 85%, allowing
heavily loaded SPARCserver 2 file servers to support many more clients.

SBus Prestoserve provides transparent performance improvement without
application modification or client rebooting.  SPARCserver 2 with an
SBus Prestoserve can also deliver exceptional performance for PC
clients on the network using PC-NFS.


HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS
------------------------------------
SBus Prestoserve consists of a single-width SBus card with 1-Mbyte of
non-volatile cache memory, a UNIX device driver and utility programs.
SBus Prestoserve is offered as an X-option (customer installable) and
is supported only on the SPARCsystem 2 with SunOS 4.1.1 or later.
Installation is easy and takes about 20 minutes to complete.


QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

1. Is SBus Prestoserve supported on the SPARCstation 1/1+ and
   SPARCstation IPC server?

   No, it is supported only on the SPARCsystem 2.  SBus Prestoserve for
   SPARCstation 1/1+ and SPARCstation IPC can be purchased from Legato
   systems [415-329-7880].

2. What version is the new Prestoserve driver?

   The new release of the Prestoserve driver is version 2.3.  The
   same driver supports both the SBus and VMEbus versions.

3. How is Sun's version different from Legato's?

   Sun's version contains 1-Mbyte of non-volatile cache RAM, whereas
   Legato's SBus Prestoserve contains 1/2-Mbyte.  The software driver
   is very similar.
