---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUNPICS INTRODUCES PRINTING SOFTWARE FOR THE JAPANESE MARKET SunFLASH Vol 34 #2 October 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nihongo NeWSprint Software Provides a Low-Cost, Efficient Way for Workstation Users to Print the Japanese Character Set on a Wide Range of Output Devices. MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--October 2, 1991--SunPics, a Sun Microsystems Inc., business, today introduced the special Nihongo NeWSprint(TM) 1.0, a version of its successful NeWSprint(TM) software designed for the Japanese market. Nihongo NeWSprint implements Sun's network printing model, an improvement over traditional printing schemes. PostScript(R) image processing is performed by the CPU of a SPARC(R) workstation rather than by the printer and fonts are stored in a server on the network. In this model, no intelligence or on-board memory are required of the printer. The result is lower-cost printers, faster image processing and, because almost any output device can support NeWSprint software, a wider selection of printing choices for the user. Nihongo NeWSprint software contains scalable outline fonts in SunPics' F3(TM) format from Morisawa and Co., Ltd., of Osaka, Japan. These fonts, Ryumin and Gothic, are identical to those distributed with LaserWriter(R) NTX-J, a common PostScript printer in Japan. Applications that have been printing on the NTX-J will send output seamlessly to printers supporting Nihongo NeWSprint software. Users will be able to acquire additional F3 fonts in the Japanese character set from a variety of sources including Morisawa, which recently licensed SunPics' TypeMaker(TM) software tools for fast creation of scalable F3 fonts. Additional Japanese TypeMaker software licensees will be added and made public over the next three months. Fifty-seven Latin F3 fonts also are included with Nihongo NeWSprint software, and more than 1,200 additional Latin F3 fonts are available from suppliers such as Linotype, Monotype, URW and others. "The key to the success of any printing solution in Japan is quick and easy creation of scalable Japanese fonts," said William Marr, vice president and general manager of SunPics. "TypeMaker tools enabled SunPics to offer high-quality Morisawa scalable fonts with Nihongo NeWSprint software." To date, 23 Japanese companies have agreed to support Nihongo NeWSprint in their printers, plotters, FAX products or filters (see list below). Nihongo NeWSprint software was developed jointly by SunPics and Nihon Sun Microsystems, a SunPics reseller. The product was first announced by Nihon Sun Microsystems on August 24, 1991, in Tokyo. Nihongo NeWSprint will be available in Japan in late fall 1991 through SunPics resellers including Nihon Sun. The software will be bundled with SunPics's SPARCprinter(TM) systems and the SBus Printer Card sold in Japan, or can be purchased separately. The product will be available outside Japan through SunPics resellers to be announced. The Nihongo NeWSprint product includes software that supports the SPARCprinter system and other output devices, two scalable Japanese fonts, 57 scalable Latin F3 fonts, and a developer's kit for quick and easy support of additional devices. SunPics was formed in July 1991 as a business unit of Sun Microsystems, Inc., to underscore Sun's commitment to the printing and imaging business. SunPics is dedicated to developing and promoting technology that makes printing faster, less expensive and more flexible for network-based workgroups. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing solutions, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX(R) operating system and productivity software.
