---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUN UNVEILS NEW TEMPEST-COMPLIANT SPARCSTATION 2GX SunFLASH Vol 30 #2 June 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --June 4, 1991--Sun Microsystems today introduced the most powerful TEMPEST SPARC(R) desktop computer currently available, the new TEMPEST-compliant SPARCstation(TM) 2GX graphics workstation. At nearly twice the speed of the TEMPEST SPARCstation 1+, the new system maintains Sun's extremely compact design. All of the system's electronics, including mass storage, are contained within Sun's small "pizza box" CPU enclosure. This high-performance system is aimed at RISC/UNIX(R) government users and contractors requiring secure hardware capabilities. The TEMPEST-compliant packaging developed by Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, features 16 megabytes of memory and accelerated 2-D graphics, including fast windowing and text. The system enclosure has a key-lockable front door to allow controlled access to the power switch, the floppy drive and removable hard disk drives. Up to two optional 207-megabyte hard disk drives can be included in the system enclosure. An optional Desktop Storage Pack with a 150-megabyte SCSI 1/4-inch tape and an optional Desktop SunCD(TM) Pack with a 644-megabyte CD-ROM drive are also available. The system's powerful 40 MHz CPU offers 21 SPECmarks (or 28.5 MIPS and 4.2 MFLOPS). The standard TEMPEST system includes a 19-inch high-resolution color monitor, 8-bit accelerated 2-D/3-D graphics (using the GX graphics accelerator), a 3.5-inch DOS-compatible floppy drive, a keyboard and mouse. It also has integrated external ports for Ethernet, serial RS-423, and SCSI-2 peripheral support. "With our new TEMPEST SPARCstation, users can create a secure computing environment regardless of location, as well as easily and cost-effectively expand their existing computing resources," said Charles W. Berger, vice president of Sun Federal. The new system is binary compatible with all Sun(TM) SPARC-based computers and is capable of running more than 3,350 SPARCware(TM) products. All Sun systems feature the easy-to-use OPEN LOOK(R) graphical interface, which simplifies the operation of UNIX computers. The TEMPEST SPARCstation 2GX has been tested and is compliant with NACSIM 5100A. Prices for the new system start at $29,995. Shipment of this product will begin in August, 1991. Sun Microsystems is the world's leading supplier of client/server computing solutions, which feature networked workstations and servers that store, process and distribute information.
