---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunSelect cuts price of SunPC Software SunFLASH Vol 50 #4 February 1993 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also Unveils New Version of Product with Motif and NetWare Support CHELMSFORD, Mass.-January 19, 1993--SunSelect(TM), a business unit of Sun Microsystems, Inc., today announced significant price reductions for its popular SunPC(TM) emulation software and hardware acceleration products. SunSelect's suggested U.S. list price for SunPC(TM) software, which enables SPARC(R) workstation users to run MS-DOS(R) and Microsoft(R) Windows(R) with UNIX(R) applications on a single system, has been reduced. The prices for SunPC hardware acceleration products have also been reduced. "The price reductions announced today make SunSelect the price leader for PC emulation products," said Cliff Utstein, senior product manager at SunSelect. "With high-performance emulation products available at these prices, we think power PC users who are considering upgrading to a workstation will find this to be a more attractive alternative than ever." In addition to the price reductions, SunSelect has also unveiled Version 3.1 of SunPC software, with new features and enhancements. The product now permits workstation users to access NetWare(R) servers in addition to NFS(R) (Network File System) systems, so the SunPC user can now use the workstation to run PC applications that reside on NetWare local-area networks (LANs). SunPC 3.1 software also includes expanded support for X Window System(TM) managers, including Motif(R), and supports a simplified licensing mechanism. (SMCC availability of SunPC 3.1 will be announced later - johnj) The SunPC product family, introduced in April, 1992, has been well received by customers as an efficient way to run PC applications on powerful UNIX system workstations. The product linE--which includes SunPC software, the SunPC Accelerator SX card for higher MS-DOS and MS-Windows performance, and the SunPC Accelerator DX card for the most demanding floating-point and graphics- intensive applications--allows users to access UNIX and PC applications simultaneously from a single desktop computer, thereby avoiding the expense and inconvenience of using different computers for different tasks. About SunSelect SunSelect was established in April 1992 to provide personal computer users access to a range of company-wide computing resources, regardless of platform or operating environment. SunSelect is headquartered in Chelmsford, Mass., and has offices in Alameda, Calif., Bagshot, U.K., and Tokyo, Japan.
