     SunPro offers broadest range of languages and tools for
                 Solaris and SPARC environments

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.Sept 23., 1991 _ Sun Microsystems, Inc., today
announced the formation of SunPro, a new business focusing exclusively
on the needs of professional programmers.  SunPro develops, markets,
and supports software products that are crucial to the development of
computer applications. These products include optimizing compilers for
building new applications, programmer productivity tools that enable
the developer to complete work faster and more accurately, and
workgroup integration products that help teams of developers work more
effectively.

Although primarily known as a systems manufacturer, Sun has, since the
company's formation, invested heavily in compiler technology and tools
to increase the productivity of software developers. While Sun
initially targeted these products to its platforms, the company
recognized the opportunity to expand its software business in the
growing SPARC and Solaris marketplaces. Consequently, in July 1991, Sun
Microsystems formed SunPro as a business unit and transferred its
entire line of compiler and software development products, along with
the associated engineering, marketing, and support staff, to the new
organization.

"Because of its inheritance from Sun Microsystems, SunPro is already
the leading vendor of UNIX development tools in the industry," said
Scott McNealy, CEO of Sun Microsystems. "This new business will provide
excellent solutions for the professional programmer."

Sun has shipped over 500,000 units of software development products to
organizations worldwide that range from Fortune 500 corporations to
large government agencies, universities, and independent software
vendors. SunPro's target customer develops sophisticated, distributed,
mission-critical applications for 32-bit UNIX environments.

The company's family of SPARCworks Professional products is the first
compilation and development technology for Solaris 2.0, the UNIX System
V Release 4 (SVR4) environment developed by SunSoft, Inc. SunPro
products already support Solaris 1.0, which is based on SunSoft's SunOS
4.1 operating system and OpenWindows environment. Like Solaris, SunPro
products run on SPARC-based systems and will be ported to Intel
80X86-based personal computers.

Product Distribution

SunPro products are distributed through value-added resellers and
distributors who serve professional programmers worldwide.  These
channels include the Sun Microsystems direct sales force; Sun's
indirect channel partners, including NYNEX and MicroAge; SunExpress, a
new Sun direct telemarketing business; OEMs such as Fujitsu Ltd.; SPARC
compatible manufacturers such as Solbourne Computer Inc.; and
distributors like Access Graphics.
